The maxim 'anything goes' from the 20's/30's days of Cabaret still rings true today in Europe's party capital.
Sarah Marshall, music journalist and author of both Hg2 Berlin and
Hg2 Lisbon delved into it's hidden underbelly to find the places no other guide will tell you about.
'So, what does Berlin have to offer?', I hear you ask
Driven by an unconventional and uncompromising spirit and the emergence of East Berlin's thriving fashion, bar and club scene, Berlin has fast become the party capital of Europe. But Berlin is essentially a hidden city - a marvel to unravel, but frustratingly difficult without the right guidance. Go beyond the obvious to discover its thriving (but largely overlooked) cafe culture, concept-led restaurants, stylish bars and wild clubs.
How long do I stay?
Berlin is a sprawling and enormous city, but you can experience the best of it in just a few days. Prepare to get acquainted with the efficient U-Bahn and S-Bahn service, it's not really a city that can be tackled on foot, rather take each area in turn and experience
Prenzlauer Berg's leafy café society;
Mitte's cool restaurant, bar and fashion scene; the charm of smart
Charlottenburg; and
Kreuzberg's wild clubs.
When should I go?
Berlin is wonderful during the summer when the temperature hits 25°C and the city's beaches open. The run up to Christmas can be fabulous as the smow settles across the rooftops and traditional Christmas markets abound, selling picturesque tat and warming
glühwein. However, spring can be slow to arrive – usually not until April. January and February are often bitterly cold (-3°C) as winds blow in from Siberia and skies remain doggedly concrete in colour.
Where should I stay?
The city’s most famous hotels are temples of opulent luxury, at the top of the pile The Adlon, Dorint Am Gendarmenmarkt and Brandenburger Hof are elegant to the core, whilst the design hotels offer a tour de force in sleek styling, try the Q!-Hotel and Ku’damm 101. For a slice of unadulterated Berlin, check into the truly outrageous Propeller City Island which has themed rooms including ‘Chicken Curry’ and ‘Goth’ rooms or choose an art hotel like the Künstlerheim Louise.
