Review

Once the most luxurious hotel in the world, the Adlon opened its grand doors in 1907 with support from Kaiser Wilhelm II. The original building burnt down after World War II and the new Adlon opened in 1997. Located next to the Brandenburg Gate and Berlin's diplomatic quarter, it's a popular choice for heads of state and deemed fit enough for the Queen – who opted for the Adlon on her last trip to Berlin. On the downside, the entrance is always swamped with tourists although frosty doorstaff do their best to deter non-guests. The rooms (382 in total) are grand, but relatively characterless, and appeal to a more refined clientele. Three bullet-proof Presidential suites, however, would suit any professional on his majesty's service and are truly palatial. Upstairs, the exclusive gourmet restaurant Lorenz Adlon offers French haute cuisine. Downstairs, the Restaurant Quarré is characterized by modern cuisine and provides a unique view of the Brandenburg Gate.
