Once the most luxurious hotel in the world, the Adlon opened its grand doors in 1907 with support from Kaiser Wilhelm II. The original building burnt down after World War II and the new Adlon opened in 1997.
Located next to the Brandenburg Gate and Berlin’s diplomatic quarter, it’s a popular choice for heads of state and deemed fit enough for the Queen – who opted for the Adlon on a recent trip to Berlin. On the down-side, the entrance is always swamped with tourists, although frosty door staff do their best to deter non-residents.
The rooms (337 in total) are grand, but relatively characterless, and appeal to the more genteel. Two bullet-proof presidential suites, however, would suit any professional on Her Majesty’s service and are truly palatial.
Upstairs, the exclusive Chinese restaurant is open to members only – but worth a visit if you have the connections, as the food is sensational. Downstairs, the upmarket Felix functions as a bar, restaurant and club space.
