A love of all things Italian has inspired this romantic hotel. Its grand façade with ornate Renaissance trimming would be more at home in Verona than the drab streets of West Berlin.

Inside, rooms are small but pleasant with plush red bedspreads and fairy-tale furnishings. Artworks are of Italian design and bring a touch of the Florentine to the household.

Popular with a domestic German crowd, who seem fascinated with Europe’s wayward boot, the hotel is quiet and guests are largely left to their own devices. Downstairs a popular restaurant serves, rather unsurprisingly, pizza.

Deals run throughout the week and a sister branch can be found at Savignyplatz. The location isn’t up to much unless you plan to explore the largely uneventful backstreets of West Berlin.
