Review

The Ellington is a new hotel with some serious history. Berlin high society danced the evening away in the famous Femina Palast ballroom back in the 1920s; jazz fans met here after the war when it was the jazz club ‘Badewanne’; and in the 1970s, Frank Zappa, David Bowie and Iggy Pop partied the night away at the legendary ‘Dschungel’ disco. These days the ambience is somewhat more restrained, but much of the original interior remains unchanged. The foyer is still partly intact, as are the ceramic tiles on the walls and the striking main staircase. The rest of the hotel has been remodelled to feel resolutely modern through a mix of wood, glass and chrome, that creates a designer-luxe feel. The 285 rooms are spacious and designed in a similar vein, while the ‘Duke’ restaurant downstairs has an open kitchen and stylish lounge area. There's a gorgeous summer terrace too, perfect for sipping early evening cocktails or dining out on balmy summer nights. Situated just around the corner from the Ku'damm,  the Ellington is a well-placed bet for shopping and partying – or both.
