Review

Often referred to as ‘a gallery where you spend the night’, this art-lover’s paradise is less a place to lay your head and more a sight to stimulate the mind and the senses.

Each of the 50 rooms has been decorated by a different international artist; they range from the innovative to the utterly bizarre. The ‘belle etage’ lies in the older part of the building – a neo-classical house dating back to 1825.

Rooms can be viewed and reserved in advance from the hotel’s website: Elvira Bach’s Three Women In Red in Room 101 depicts a wall size image of (you’ve guessed it) three women against a red backdrop, while black-and-white pinstripes create a harsh optical illusion; stranger still is Christoph Platz’s ‘Standby’ (Room 411) where 3D plaster casts of multicoloured socks have been glued to the wall; and Dieter Mammel’s larger than life-size bed (Room 107) is yet to be rivalled.

The hotel is situated close to East Berlin’s biggest attractions.
