Review

If you tend to tire of hotel interiors easily, we challenge you to take on the Propeller City Island. Artist Lars Stroschen initially rented out four rooms as a means of earning some extra income, but demand was so high an entire hotel evolved.

Each of the 30 rooms is unique – a figment of his sometimes warped and always unpredictable imagination. In the ‘Flying Room’ a bed is suspended over a floor at a 45° angle; in the ‘Goth Room’ a family of four can sleep in coffins; in the ‘Upside Down Room’ furniture is glued to the ceiling, with beds built into the floorboards; while the ‘Dwarf Room’ is just 1.40m high and home to several plastic gnomes.

Each of the rooms also contains a six-channel radio featuring frog calls recorded by the artist in Bali. All rooms can be viewed on the website (www.propeller-island.com) and guests can even swap for no extra cost for stays over four nights. Only in Berlin.
