This former 18th-century palace was once the home of Portuguese novelist Eça de Queiros and supposedly the inspiration for his novels O Ramalhete and Os Maias. In turn, his one-time presence can be felt in the many objets d’art, books, paintings and mementos that fill this small and intimate hotel.

All 29 rooms are bright and cheerful, some with virtually uninterrupted views of the Tejo. A communal library with a terrace is a wonderful spot for relaxing, and taking stock of the day ahead; it’s particularly pleasant at about 5pm when the late afternoon sun sweeps through the building. Combined with the honesty bar next door (a Hoteis Heritage trait), it’s incentive enough never to leave. A winding cast-iron staircase leads to a patio garden where breakfast is served daily.

Despite being within walking-distance of the Santos and Docas nightlife, the hotel’s elevated position guarantees peace and quiet. Guests are of the cultured and respectable type and elderly couples celebrating their golden wedding tend to predominate.
