With a central location and luxurious premises, the Hotel Avenida Palace has a captive audience – and the owners sure know it! Originally built in 1892, this historic building underwent a $7 million renovation in 1998. Local designers Lucien Donnat and João Chichorro used a blend of Louis XV, Louis XVI, Dona Maria, Dom José and classic Imperial styles to decorate the interior.
The result is a clumsy mish-mash of furnishings that conflict rather than contrast – all at the expense of good taste. In its defence, the hotel enjoys a sense of grandeur and character unrivalled in this part of town. Vast ballrooms complete with chandeliers, along with long marble corridors, hint at opulent bygone eras. Marble bathrooms are cavernous and all rooms soundproofed. But make sure you look the part; hostile staff are unnecessarily snooty and stirred only by the colour of money. The hotel is conveniently located next to Rossio station.
