The problem with 5 star hotels is the fact they are awarded the stars for meeting certain criteria, as opposed to being among the highest echelons of service, style and comfort. The Altis ticks all the right boxes but, for us anyway, just seemed to lack the certain something that makes a great hotel.

Primarily a hotel for business customers, the Altis suffers from a drab and stale atmosphere. That said, this 303-room, city-centre hotel offers a generous range of facilities. The heated indoor swimming pool is somewhat larger than the usual toe-dippers and the gym is well equipped.
The Rendez Vous coffee shop, serving light meals all day, is a welcome addition and gives this otherwise slightly sterile establishment a sense of vibrancy. The roof top, with original 1970s leather seating, is a popular choice for businessmen and politicians.
The Altis also offers self-contained apartments in a block over the road, suitable for longer stays. Complete with kitchenette, living area and study space, they benefit from a greater degree of privacy. Comfortable, convenient and functional.
