This Art Nouveau building occupies the space above Café Nicola, in the heart of Rossio. The impressive white façade masks an interior in need of some modernization. Nevertheless, rooms are clean and spacious; some include original 1920s furnishings, and the marble-decorated bathrooms are relatively luxurious. Several of the rooms have balconies, with views of the São Jorge castle and Rossio square.
The building also has a poignant history: communist revolutionaries addressed the city from these very windows during the 1974 revolution. Now it’s just a great spot to watch Lisbon go about its business. The hotel bar is pleasant, but older guests intent on sightseeing rarely stop for long. By day rooms can be noisy: that’s the price for being in the thick of the action.
Restaurants, bars, cafés and major attractions are within easy walking distance and a constant stream of taxis will ferry guests further afield.
