The concept behind this 11-room residence runs in much the same vein as nearby Palácio Belmonte: each space has its own distinct character, with an overall emphasis on intimacy. This is another Lisbon hotel owned by a Frenchman – artist and collector Luis Lemos – but is far less extravagant and expensive than the Belmonte. Contemporary works of art, including several by Lemos himself, have been carefully selected to give each area individual character.

The spacious rooms are more like mini apartments, with sofas and stereo equipment. Staff are also happy to accommodate three people to a room – an ideal option for friends.

Built within the foundations of the Porto d’Alfofa, which once gave access to the Castle, the hotel combines hilltop views of the city with the convenience of a mere 5-minute walk to the town centre. Communal areas are thin on the ground, although a guest bar is due to open this year. Prices are exceptionally reasonable for a hotel of this quality.
