A Hedonist's Guide to London

Our 2nd edition of Hg2 London takes readers out of the West End tourist traps and into the chic streets of Westbourne Grove, the increasingly sophisticated fun of Hoxton and, of course, slick Mayfair restaurants. Our excellent team of in-the-know London-based journalist's prove why there is more to London than the traditional tourist icons.

'Buses, bobbies and Buckingham Palace - Is London really a contemporary fashion capital?, I hear you ask

Although these tourist icons live on in London, they remain rare constants in a city that embraces progress and chases the Next Big Thing.  London has always nurtured independence and idiosyncrasy and its liberal, progressive outlook makes for a modern, dynamic metropolis happy to adopt a new set of icons – namely, the London Eye, Chelski Football

How long sh
ould I stay for?

It depends on your agenda: to eat, drink and party, a long weekend would suffice, all be in a little manic.  But to include some shopping and sightseeing you may be inclined to stay for a week.

When should I go?

During the spring and summer months the mood in London is noticably uplifted, in comparison to the winter months that surroud Christmas.  Replacing grey skies and dirty rain is fresh - and hopefully sunny - mornings which lead into warmer afternoons, and bright, clear evenings.  Hyde Park - any park, infact - becomes buzzing with groups enjoying picnics, while riverside bars are a wonderful place to enjoy an early evening drink before supper.  Spend some time strolling through Portabello and Spittalfields market, which is decidedly less stressful in these dry(er) months.

Where should I stay?

From the contemporary luxe-style hotels, to the traditional Grand-Dame Classics, London has an enormous variety of wonderful hotels to offer.  If Palacial grandeur is your thing, try the glitz of The Ritz on Piccadilly or perhaps Mayfair's most prestigious venue - and London's most-loved luxury hotel - Claridges.  Enjoy chic-design at the Covent Garden Hotel as well as it's wonderful location in the West End, or perhaps the stylish Baglioni overlooking Hyde Park may suit.  If partying in chic Hoxton is more your game, try the Conran-designed, Great Eastern Hotel, where style and sophistication come together in this trendy area of the city.
