Opened in 2007, this 55-room five-star hotel contains all the Kemp ingredients which have proved so popular in their sister hotels (Charlotte Street, Covent Garden et al), plus a few added attractions. Super-plush guest rooms are English-eccentric in feel, bathrooms are kitted out in granite and oak and the thoughtfully designed communal areas feature quirky artworks by a host of contemporary artists. But it’s the glamorous 18ft swimming pool (cleverly illuminated with coloured lighting) and adjacent bar that take centre stage.
The fun, buzzy atmosphere reaches a crescendo on Friday nights when The Globe Girls (drag queens who are anything but a drag) perform cabaret acts for the amusement of revellers. It’s a more genteel affair upstairs in the Brumus bar and restaurant which serves Italian fare throughout the day. The hotel’s super-central location (literally a stone’s throw from Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square) is either a huge plus or pain depending on your sensibilities. But if the commotion of the capital gets too much you can always take a stroll through nearby St James’s Park.
