High Road House

162 Chiswick High Road, W4, London

High Road House

High Road House is one of our most 'far out' hotels in the sense that it's located slightly out of town, in leafy Chiswick, not far from Kew Gardens and Syon House. Everything runs at a slightly slower pace here and it's perfect for a more relaxing kind of London break. Despite what some might say, it is a good base for exploring the rest of London, if you also want to spend some time away from the crowds.

Review

The idea behind HRH (aka Soho House Chiswick) is don’t try and get home from this leafy West London suburb after a big night – just stay over. Opened in 2007 by Soho House’s creator Nick Jones, the HRH crowd is slightly older but just as media-savvy – people who’ve been there, designed the T-shirt and moved out to suburbia; non-members can gain instant access by staying in one of the 14 small but reasonably priced guest rooms.

Design guru Ilse Crawford’s judicious use of fresh colours and eclectic furniture has resulted in rooms both restful and characterful. Bathrooms have decent-sized showers (no baths) and a generous sprinkling of Cowshed products. Downstairs, the thirtysomething hipsters party like it’s 1999 on Friday and Saturday nights after dumping the kids with nanny; Sundays begin with a bleary-eyed brunch accompanied by their little darlings.

The location – a short stroll from Kew Gardens and a 20-minute drive to Heathrow – makes it a good West London base if the centre of town has little appeal.
