Built in the 1880s as a private home for an artistic family, the house also contained a theatre and a literary salon in the 1920s. The hotel retains its original nineteenth century façade, old cobbled carriage entrance and an elegant stone stairwell.

This 19th-century palace, in a leafy residential street in the Chamberi district, was converted to a hotel in the 1990s but still has that palace feel. Its lobby, with its huge floral displays and chaises longues, has welcomed many dignitaries and VIPs, but the highly professional staff treat all guests with equal reverence.
With only 28 rooms and four suites, the service is particularly personal. Each room is different but all are exquisitely decorated. Those with attic-style sloping ceilings have the most character. All rooms have hydro-massage baths and the usual array of high-tech gadgets, but they’re discreetly tucked away so they don’t interfere with the traditional design. All guests are welcomed with a bottle of cava.
