Kasbah Agafay is the brainchild of Moroccan entrepreneur Abel Damoussi. It took three years to buy the Kasbah from its previous 36 owners, and as many years again to restore the building to its current glory. It’s one of the most stunning properties in Morocco, sitting on a rise commanding spectacular views across the desert, fields and out to the High Atlas and Jebel Toubkal, their highest point.
Rooms and suites – 20 in total – are built around five main courtyards, connected by a veritable labyrinth of corridors. The décor combines traditional Moroccan with contemporary styles, but it’s the lavish attention to detail that makes Agafay stand out – such as Berber tent poles in the four-poster beds and antique keys as lavatory-paper holders. As well as the bedrooms inside the Kasbah itself there are four tented suites outside whose sides all open out onto the landscape – incredibly romantic if not particularly intimate.
A full set of amenities is on offer, including a hamman, spa centre (with yoga room), floodlit tennis court, large pool, a divine drawing room and a fabulous restaurant. If you don’t want to stay here you can always come for lunch (a 350dh set menu), sign up for a cooking class, use the spa or all three.
