The village of Imlil is the starting-point for the ascension of Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa. There are plenty of backpackers and hotels in the village, but the Kasbah is without doubt the premier accommodation spot, not just in Imlil, but in the whole of the High Atlas region too.
It’s a peaceful, rustic mountain retreat with respectable eco-friendly policies (collecting rubbish from local villages, recycling, filtering spring water), and part of the money they receive goes towards local community services such as public hammams and village ambulances. There is a range of different sleeping arrangements, from dorms and standard rooms to suites and self-catering-style apartments (with kitchen/living room/all mod-cons). Other amenities include a wonderful restaurant (bring your own alcohol if you want to drink), a hammam and plunge pool, and a panoramic roof terrace that looks out over tranquil villages and verdant valleys.
Climbs and treks can be arranged through the Kasbah staff; prices range from 25dh for a half-day trek to 200dh (per person) for a full ascent, all with guides, cooks, mules, accommodation and drinks (if required). It’s a beautiful way to spend a few days away from the hustle and bustle of the city, and a great place to start and end a Toubkal climb or other High Atlas walk.
