La Sultana opened its doors to the public in the spring of 2004, immediately becoming a member of Small Luxury Hotels Of The World, though ‘small’ isn’t the first adjective that leaps to mind when you step inside the grandiose door into what would appear to be an opulent palace of a place.
Located just off a main thoroughfare in the Kasbah and overlooking the Saadian Tombs, the building took two years to reassemble, and required experienced local craftsmen to reconstruct the classical Moroccan architecture. There are 21 rooms, arranged over three levels, and around four separate courtyards that display a range of different artisan’s materials (tadelakt, wood, brick, paint).
More hotel-like that many other riads, Sultana offers an impressive array of traditional and modern extras – there are giant giraffe paintings in the rooms alongside DVD players and ADSL points (no wireless). The roof terrace incorporates an open-air massage centre and a quiet space for drinks at sunset, while downstairs a swimming pool set in a verdant courtyard helps ease the heat of the day and a small, ship-themed bar (complete with underwater views of the pool) is well stocked. The restaurant, which serves a mix of delicious Moroccan cuisine and international food, is open to the public.
