Review
Les Jardins de la Koutoubia stands on the site of the 13th-century Riad Ouarzazi. The owner – a wealthy French textile manufacturer – was merciless in tearing down what was one of the biggest riads in town (it held 25 families), and erecting this giant hotel in its place.
By five-star hotel standards, it boasts the requisite degree of style and intimacy. The wooden, linear reception leads out into a massive courtyard dominated by a huge pool and verdant gardens. The salons around the pool are a talking point, with their traditional furnishings – immense lamps, jewellery, bookcases – created in Brobdingnagian proportions.
The rooms, while pleasant enough and boasting all the expected comforts, lack the same sense of innovation and charm, although they are sleek and elegant (in particular the newer suites, which are much bigger). In addition there are two fine restaurants where you can enjoy an inexpensive lunch, a wonderful piano bar, a jacuzzi on the roof with views over the Koutoubia, and a spa, hammam and fitness centre.
