Part maison d’hôte, part museum, El Cadi is famous for its stunning collection of rare antiquities and textiles, the personal property of late owner, the former German ambassador Herwig Bartels. The Riad El Cadi – now run by his amiable daughter Julia – dates back to the 13th and 14th centuries, making it much older than many others in the Medina.
The winding staircases and twisting corridors connect six houses, all of which still bear separate names and identities and can be rented out in their entirety. The place is a maze of patios, salons and passages to the suites and rooms, which all differ in size, décor and layout (and also in price), although all have their own private bathrooms (the four rooms on the ground floor have showers; those on the first floor have baths).
The impeccably tasteful decoration (ancient Berber costumes, antique textiles from the Atlas, Ottoman embroideries) extends throughout the public areas and all the rooms, and the service is both highly discreet and superbly efficient. El Cadi also boasts a swimming pool, a jacuzzi, a hammam, a well-stocked library, large terraces, dining and conference rooms, plus wifi in the courtyard, massages on demand, and a wonderful range of Bordeaux wines.
