The romantic Antica Locanda Solferino used to be an inn for couples wanting to ‘get a room’. Now, endearingly decorated with early 20th-century antiques, crisp sheets and floral quilts, it’s more like staying in granny’s guest bedroom. All 11 rooms in this Napoleonic building in Brera are different, variously adorned with broderie anglaise curtains, lace doilies, antique dressers and original shutters and radiators.
Amenities are simple, with TVs in all rooms and aircon in some. There are no public areas, just a flower-filled reception in the hallway (serviced from 7am until 11pm), attached to a trattoria that supplies the room service; the friendly staff will oblige most other requests. Breakfast in bed is obligatory since there’s no breakfast room – cute for weekending couples.
For complete privacy, the locanda has two stylish apartments in Via San Marco, rather removed from its olde-worlde charm with late 1960s designer furniture.
