A member of the Leading Small Hotels of the World, this five-star hotel calls itself the city’s ‘drawing room’ (a moniker in fact borrowed from Milan’s 19th-century Galleria shopping arcade). The Baglioni is stately but not grand – thanks to low ceilings and the welcoming aroma of log fires – and is decorated in turn-of-last-century antique statuettes, Persian rugs, crystal chandeliers and silk brocades.

Its gentlemanly library is the perfect place to affect old-fashioned traditions with a pipe in front of the fireplace. Art-deco touches, such as rosewood marquetry on doors and marble mosaic floors, attract the style savants, also wise to the doorstep shopping opportunities here (its back entrance leads to Via della Spiga).

Guests pay a premium on the 92 small, soundproofed rooms, though suites have large private terraces. With a piano bar and the famous Il Baretto restaurant that joined the hotel in 2003 after 42 years on Via Sant’ Andrea, the Baglioni is a trusty old stalwart in the heart of a fickle fashion world.
