Visitors to Milan with an ambition of waking up to a view of the Duomo should check into the Grand Hotel Duomo. All its suites and superior rooms come with a view (and a premium) since it flanks the Piazza del Duomo.
The hotel also comes with tourist-pleasing history, as it is housed within the 19th-century Palazzo Mengoni, designed by eminent Milanese architect Giuseppe Mengoni who also designed the hotel’s next-door neighbour, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II.
This 162-room five-star hotel is now owned by the art-dealing Marabini family. Its interior has been decorated according to the contemporary taste of Liana, the wife, and while there is lots of colour and light, its look is slightly busy with add-on layers of renovation and artwork over the years.
Guests are best off looking outwards at the excellent views – from the first-floor Ristorante Duomo (somewhat past its sell-by date now) that looks out at the Duomo through a 19th-century portico, or from the large roof terrace serviced by the L’Orangerie restaurant; only committed tourists need stay for the meal.
