Amid much competition for central five-star hotels, the Milan is the preferred choice for a veritable golden book of royalty, statesmen and stars past and present (its devotees drop the name’s clumsy ‘et de’, a French wartime addition). Many of its 18 suites are dedicated to its historic guests, including Verdi, Callas and Nureyev (it’s evidently handy for La Scala).
Opened in 1863 and now a member of the Leading Hotels of the World, the superlatively refined Milan is unusual because it offers tradition with taste, backed up with discreet and earnest service. Behind a grand neo-Gothic façade, a further 77 well-sized rooms are individually decorated in Austro-Hungarian imperial style with graceful repro and antique furniture, parquet floors, high ceilings and large marble bathrooms.
Priceless European antiques adorn the public areas – namely the Falstaff bar and its two restaurants, the Caruso (with summer courtyard) and Don Carlos (with a Michelin-starred chef). The modern glass-cubed fitness centre is incongruously suspended in the courtyard like a goldfish bowl – useful for unsolicited star-spotting.
