Named after the Latin name for Milan, the four-star Hotel Mediolanum is certainly historic, although its reference is much more contemporary: the 1970s. A sympathetic refurbishment in 2003 has transformed a drab ’70s tower into a fashionable design hotel.
The 51 unusual rooms in loud colour schemes of avocado, salmon pink, sky blue and deep orange still feature the original furniture and fittings, such as beige Formica tables and twiddly built-in radios; wallpapers are tastefully stripy or geometric. Modern additions make it popular with business, leisure and fashion visitors, despite its unremarkable location.
The walnut- panelled lobby, packed with requisite iconic pieces by Man Ray, B&B Italia and Cassina, seems a little contrived, although its modern retro space-age bar has more appeal. It shares its sister hotel’s beautifully brick vaulted exercise room, 300m away and has its own restaurant and modest business booth.
