Since it’s owned by the Sultan of Brunei, it comes as no surprise that the design philosophy for the Principe is ‘more is more’. It calls itself the grande dame of Milan’s hotels, and with 269 rooms and 132 suites it takes the gold for size – and indeed for volume of gilt in the extravagant ground floor with its turn-of-the-century ‘eclecticism’ (the hotel was built in 1927).
You don’t get many square metres for your euro, but certainly the fuss doesn’t stop at the bedroom door: soundproofed rooms are busy with opulent furniture, rich damask walls and wood panelling. There’s often a swarm of police outside: that’s because VVIPS – including HRH Queen Elizabeth, George Bush and Michael Jackson – like to take the Principe’s presidential suite for its bodyguard facilities (although the private swimming pool might have something to do with it).
There’s also an indoor pool for hoi polloi in the hotel gym (impressive enough to be a stand-alone gym), plus a piano bar, a rococo-style café and a gilded restaurant; it is also a member of the Leading Hotels of the World. Its massive conference set-up means that it is popular with business clients.
In fact everything about the five-star Principe is super-sized, even down to the free stretched Limousine service every 15 minutes to the quadrilatero d’oro, and this review.
