The lesser-known family-run Sanpi Hotel (named after Sandro and Piera, grandparents of present owner Alberto Bulgheroni) was built around a 19th-century railway signaller’s house. This small and cheery villa – situated in the middle of a pretty courtyard garden – houses four of the hotel’s 79 rooms, all snug with cottagey sprig-print linens.
There are plenty of other eccentricities to this four-star hotel, which at first seems unexceptional, located in an urban wilderness near Buenos Aires. The décor is certainly ‘eclectic’ (chosen by Alberto’s architect wife) and the common areas feature juxtaposed contemporary and period styles. Its rooms and six suites are thankfully either/or: the newly renovated wing features quirky modern furniture and colourful Alessi bathrooms (all connected by dark, starry and glittery corridors). Other rooms are classical in style with Regency stripes and floral upholstery.
The 19th-century brick-vaulted ex-wine cellar fitness centre (which it shares with sister hotel Mediolanum), a tiny speakeasy-style bar and flowery breakfast room complete the idiosyncratic Sanpi.
