Open since 1991, the Spadari claimed the crown of Milan’s first design hotel. More recently it has segued into an art hotel and pays Saatchi-like homage to emerging young artists.
On a par subjectively but minus the sensation, the Spadari’s collection of modern art, as commissioned and curated by Palazzo Reale’s artistic director, adorns its 40 well-sized rooms, small lobby and breakfast room/bar, alongside contemporary European furniture.
Pale carved wood by respected Italian artist Ugo La Pietra and a pale blue colour scheme (both apparently relaxing in chromatherapy terms) are used throughout the hotel. And with free bedtime storybooks laid out like goodnight chocolates, and concertedly friendly service, the low-key family-run Spadari is unusual for creating calm right on the doorstep of the Duomo.
It’s also next door to Peck delicatessen (see Shop), but with all-day pasticcini from Milan’s champion baker Ernest Knam, guests may prefer to indulge in pastries in peace here.
