Among a new breed of haute hotels is the modern-classic Park Hyatt Milano, designed in the pure, clean lines of American architect Ed Tuttle and open since winter 2003. Positioned practically inside the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II in the shell of an 1875 palazzo, the five-star Park Hyatt has views of both the Duomo and the Galleria (you can practically window-shop at Prada from your bed).
Inside is a veritable study in Roman travertine stone, with 18,000m2 of the creamy rock all over the hotel, concentrated in a dramatic circular foyer with a soaring glass dome (modelled on the Galleria’s). There’s a fitness centre, spa and restaurant, and The Park Bar, one of a few hotel bars – in restrained shades of grey, aubergine and black – to attract Milan’s style cognoscenti for aperitivo.
Big spenders check straight into one of the 117 capacious rooms and suites with bathroom-sized showers, B&O TVs and CD players and fresh fruit platters delivered daily. Service is professional and friendly, but if there’s a solemn atmosphere, it’s because, while some are here to spend, most are here to make big bucks in nearby Piazza Affari.
