The splendid Metropol Hotel stands in Teatralnaya Square opposite the Bolshoi Theatre; a stunning example of Art Nouveau architecture, it is in itself a work of art. ‘The Daydreaming Princess’ decorated mosaic faÁade is indeed impressive, but wait until you get inside – the chandeliers, stained glass, mosaics and marble display opulence that will transport you back a century to pre-revolutionary Russia.
Opened in 1905, renovated in 1991 and now run by the Intercontinental group, it boasts excellent service. The 365 rooms are lavishly decorated in a classical style, each one individual in its layout and furnishings.
The Metropol restaurant has a glass ceiling nearly three stories high, creating an impressive space in which to enjoy the equally impressive Russian and French cooking. Part of Doctor Zhivago was filmed here, so keep an eye out for your very own Lara!
