A Hedonist's Guide to New-York

Alongside London, New York is the world's most vibrant city. From the chichi apartment blocks of the Upper East Side, through the skyscrapers of Midtown and into the hip Lower East Side New York is a melting pot of culture, style, fashion and food.

Andrew Stone is one of the rising stars of America's media world, currently editor-in-chief of LA Confidential and former restaurant critic for the prestigious Gotham magazine, he has every secret address and powerful contact in his very own little black book. He has lived in New York for the last 10 years and has his finger firmly on the pulse of what is hip.

New York - the city that never sleeps, really?

Yes, really. From dawn to dawn and round again New York is a city with a buzz. Start with brunch, do a little shopping, have a cup of coffee, go to a museum, back to your hotel for a rest, out for Martini's, dinner, more cocktails, dance in a club, more cocktails, breakfast in diner, back to your hotel for a quick lie down and start the whole thing over again.

How long do I stay?

You could spend a month in New York and still feel like you haven't even scratched the surface. Spend as long as you can before your money runs out and your body collapses, overdose on shopping, party until the sun comes up and pretend you belong.

When should I go?

Spring and autumn are wonderful, the summer gets very hot and people tend to leave the city for somewhere slightly less sticky, winter on the other hand is cold and snowy, but with Christmas shopping galore and January sales to contend with who cares about the weather.

Where should I stay?

Choose your hotel carefully, for quiet sophistication in Midtown head for the Mandarin Oriental or the Pierre. For something a little more cutting edge head further south to the Gramercy Park Hotel. If you want to play with the understated, but definitively hip, the Mercer in Soho is perfect; but if you want to be in the middle of it all you really can't beat Soho House
