Paris 2006: the calligraphic stencil of the word ‘Amour’ is seen everywhere on the pavements. A graffiti artist in love? Or a tag heralding the new Hotel Amour?
The trendiest duo in Paris (owners of clubs Le Baron and Le Paris, Paris; see Party) have teamed up with one of the Costes boys (of Georges at the Pompidou; see Eat) to create this hotel and restaurant. Each of the 20 rooms has its own style and character, which is so defined that one could give them themed titles. ‘Playboy bachelor pad’: a million magazines and books of 1970s female models surround the all-black walls, sheets and carpet. ‘Teenage boy’s room’: a skateboard casually leans by the bed with robot toys everywhere. Artists and illustrators have been given free rein with the décor in other rooms. Kiehl’s products fill the bathrooms.
Japanese chocolate biscuits wait on the bed. A pink, rather overexcited and adult-rated Mickey Mouse guards the reception desk, behind which pretty things (none of whom could be a day older than 25) seem to be ‘playing at hotel’. The restaurant is joyously simple: bright red banquettes, Danish chairs and a beautiful garden for the warmer months. Quite possibly the coolest hotel in Paris.
