Duc de Saint-Simon

14 rue de Saint-Simon, Invalides, The Left Bank & Latin Quarter

Duc de Saint-Simon

The cosy cavernous basement bar is the ideal place for drinking wine and contemplating French history, as one is surrounded by old portraits and 19th century furniture. The varying rooms are all lovingly decorated with patterned wallpaper and antiques, and one half feels that one might bump into Cardinal Richelieu or the Three Musketeers at breakfast.

Tucked down a little side street in the boutique stretch of the 7th arrondissement, this 19th-century building with its old carriageway door, cobble-stoned courtyard (where guests enjoy their breakfasts in the summer months) and antique-filled interior is a true romantic hide-away.

The faux marble, honey-coloured lobby may not be to everybody’s taste (although the attention to detail is impressive – even the ‘No smoking’ sign has been hand painted), but it’s difficult to resist the charm of the rest of the hotel. Here you will find austere oil paintings, Louis XVI velvet furnishings, fresh flower arrangements and a wonderful underground bar in the converted wine cellar.

The 29 rooms are traditional in style and all a little different – try to book one with a large private terrace. The current owner was so enthusiastic about the history of the place, which was converted into a hotel as far back as 1904, that he’s produced a book about it: it’s steeped in amusing anecdotes about misbehaving guests.
