Hôtel du Petit Moulin sits behind the façade of two listed buildings: an old hotel, and what is supposedly the oldest bakery in Paris – dating from the time of Henry IV, it’s apparently where Victor Hugo liked to buy his bread.
Christian Lacroix has decorated the hotel in a kaleidoscope of different styles and colours, making each of the 17 rooms unique to correspond with the various facets of the colourful Marais. Brightly coloured Arne Jacobsen chairs contrast with antiquated wallpaper, a classic wardrobe has been covered in graffiti, polka-dot rugs cover parquet floors and vamped-up Victorian bathrooms all point to Lacroix’s attempt to nourish the present with elements of the past.
The hotel’s bar (where you can have breakfast) has been done up to look like a typical trendy Marais café (a pity it’s only open to hotel guests), with collages glued onto the walls, a mixed collection of designer chairs, colourful Formica tables and petite zinc-topped bar. Highly recommended – M Lacroix should give up the day job.
