Famed as the place where Oscar Wilde died, L’Hôtel is fittingly decadent. Appropriately situated in the literary district of the Left Bank, it has low ceilings, curtain drapes, ornate pictures and fireplaces, which offer a cosy yet luxurious stay.

Each of the 20 rooms have been decorated according to a theme: ‘Marco Polo’ is à la japonaise, with porcelain lamps and a pagoda-esque, wood-panelled bed; ‘Mistinguett’ (queen of the Paris music-hall) is all mirrored Art Deco (the bed actually used to belong to her); and ‘Barroco’ is all velvety red with dark bookcases and gold fittings.

If you stay in the Oscar Wilde room, you can enjoy your own little private terrace and peacock mural, as well as various Oscar memorabilia. The hotel also has its own hammam down in its vaults, offering massages and thermal baths.
