This is a hotel geared towards a fashion-conscious clientele who feel at home in Paris’ shop-filled ‘golden triangle’. Andrée Putman truly shows off her designing capabilities here (many say it is a showcase of her best work), creating an ultra-modern boutique hotel in the shell of what once was the World War I headquarters of American General Pershing. T
he courtyard takes centre stage; landscape designer Patrick Blanc has created an evergreen vertical garden made up of 300 different botanical species that climb the stretch of one wall. Sitting next to it, you feel as if the Amazon Basin is starting to take over the concrete jungle.
The hotel’s bar is a hip party place for the 8th arrondissement, where a DJ spins every night, and the restaurant is very popular for high-design dining. The 26 rooms, kitted out with Bang & Olufsen-style mod-cons, free WiFi and a complimentary mini-bar, are simple, perhaps offering a serene respite from the rest of the hotel, with dark floors that bring out the bright white walls and bed linen. The slate-grey, minimalist bathrooms are kitted out with Talika products from the hotel’s spa downtairs.
