Decidedly futuristic hotel in the Prague scheme of things, Andels' modern design has really helped to regenerate Smichov. The only downside is the hotel is just a little too far from the centre to walk all the sights, although the metro and tram links are good, and taxis can be relatively inexpensive.

Andels was one of Prague’s first and most considered responses to the designer hotel revolution, commissioned by the Vienna International group (owners of other upmarket Prague hotels such as the Palace, Le Palais and the Savoy) and opened in 2002.
It was built to form part of Smichov’s commercial centre, and the artistic force behind the hotel are Jestico and Whiles – the architect and design company responsible for London’s The Hempel and One Aldwych. ‘Andel’ is the Czech word for ‘angel’ and, sure enough, the hotel favours bright, white, linear spaces (with thematic splashes of red), enhanced by a pale limestone lobby floor and reception desk, white walls and translucent curtains.
The hotel’s lower levels, which house the reception, bar, restaurant and conference facilities, are primarily built from glass, allowing fine views over the city. The 239 rooms and exclusive serviced studios and apartments have natural wooden features and Italian furnishings, and come equipped with DVD players, air-conditioning, internet access and slick glass bathrooms.
The bar and restaurant are very good too – a necessity since the surrounding area isn’t exactly brimming with facilities (although you can find both a shopping centre and multiplex cinema nearby).
