Prague’s Intercontinental was built in the 1970s, during the period of Soviet Occupation. The hotel’s suites have hosted luminaries such as Michael Jackson, Madeleine Albright and – legend has it – terrorist Carlos the Jackal. Badly damaged in the 2002 floods, the Intercontinental is today back in full swing, flaunting its position at the top of fashionable Parízská and attracting affluent business and leisure travellers who seek upmarket chain hotel facilities and proximity to stylish boutiques and chic restaurants.
The original 1970s design has been updated with modern rooms, a glittering, state-of-the-art fitness centre and an atrium restaurant. The standard guest rooms may not be very large but are comfortable, and feature decent but not exceptional upholstered furniture, computer ports and marble bathrooms.
The hotel comes equipped with all the conveniences you’d expect, and the fitness centre includes an impressive golf simulator on which execs can play the Belfry or Augusta in between conferences. On the roof, the Zlatá Praha restaurant offers guests a scenic dining experience with views of many of Prague’s ‘thousand spires’.
While stylish and well equipped, the Intercontinental does not quite manage to shake off the air of a chain hotel, and those seeking a more seductive ambience should look elsewhere.
