Le Palais

U Zvonarky 1, Prague

Le Palais

At the far end of Vinohrady, just before you reach the Nusle Valley is the quietly sequestered Le Palais. Opened in 2002 after a extensive reconstruction guests favouring the grand ex-palace are more interested in luxury, seclusion and peace than they are in tearing around the fleshpots of Prague. The overwhelming feeling of serenity pervades and visitors are treated to one of the city's few in-hotel spas, delicious dining and attentive service.

This edifice, constructed at the end of the 19th century, was entirely renovated in 2001–02 by the Vienna International Hotels group. Located in what was once a palace (unsurprisingly, given the name), the beautiful Belle Époque space retains many of its original features, including wooden ceilings, stuccowork and murals.

With nods to the modern, the hotel is also equipped with all of the necessary mod-cons, a great restaurant (Le Papillon, run by Radek Subrt), relaxing bar and also a health spa/fitness centre. Although it’s a beautiful place to stay, it should be mentioned that Le Palais is a 30-minute walk (or 10-minute taxi ride) from the centre.

These days, however, its location is not so much of a problem since the quiet and affluent Vinohrady neighbourhood enjoys an assortment of sophisticated bars and restaurants. The 72 rooms, designed, like the interior, by Veronika Jurkowitsch, are comfortable, but kitted out with slightly predictable chain-hotel furniture and coverings.

It’s worth paying the extra for one of the suites with an open fireplace if you feel like adding a splash of colour and romance to your stay.
