Maximilian

A relatively recent renovation has left the Maximilian with a host of contemporary charms, blending Art Deco, Modernism and contemporary design. A great option for a weekend break, the hotel's proximity to the designer-heavy Parizska makes it a shoppers paradise.

Review

The Maximilian aims for the same kind of comfort and style as its sister hotel, the Josef (see page Sleep), but adopts a slightly less self-conscious air – think Small Luxury rather than Design Hotel. Reconstructed throughout 2005, the hotel offers 70 rooms and one suite.

Josef designer Eva Jirˇicˇná has worked the Maximilian into a sweeping amalgamation of Art Deco, Modernism and contemporary design styles. A colourful library, snug drawing room (with fireplace) and glass-roofed breakfast section provide comfortable public spaces.

The guest rooms are similarly inviting with their Eileen Grey tables, swooshes of blue and orange across neutral colour schemes and a range of conveniences (rain showers, telephones, ISDN/WiFi, satellite TV).

The emphasis is very much on personal service here, and with a dedicated Sabai spa downstairs (complete with therapy rooms, flotation centre and Thai massage), the Maximilian is a great place to unwind.
