Palace

The Palace Hotel has been in existence as a hotel since 1909. A splendid Art Nouveau construction, the facade and the interior reflect Prague's rich architectural heritage. The hotel has been consistently viewed as one of the best in town and staying here is rather a formal experience. Opposite the hotel is the Mucha Museum, Prague's most famous exponent of Art Nouveau painting.

One of the smartest hotels in Prague, the appositely titled Palace was first opened in 1909. Today it forms part of the Vienna International Hotels group, but still offers the kind of style and pomp you’d expect from an old-world hotel. After all, there must be a reason why Enrico Caruso, Steven Spielberg and Prince Charles chose to stay here.

Signs of continuing grandeur are happily ubiquitous, most notably in the lobby and the façade of the hotel. There is a good restaurant and a decent bar attached, and service throughout is impeccable. The one-time glory of the rooms has faded somewhat, replaced by a comfortable and functional aesthetic that panders to business and leisure travellers alike.

That said, the Italian white marble bathrooms with extra telephones are a nice touch, and recent refurbishments have made the rooms more up to date and relieved them of some of their former stuffiness.

The hotel is popular not only with visiting dignitaries and the odd celebrity but also with high-class tour groups and conferences; still, anyone seeking an upmarket and individual experience should feel at home here.
