Savoy

The Savoy name has been synonymous with elegant, old-world sophistication in the hotel world for a while, much like the Hotel Bristol. Such reputations need upholding and reinvigorating - Prague's Savoy is no exception, once the cream of the city's hotel scene, it has slipped in recent years behind upstarts from the Mandarin Oriental, Boscolo and Four Seasons groups, and while calmly genteel lacks the noughties attention to detail.

One of the city’s old-guard hotels, this 55-room establishment is popular with the A-list, and often plays host to visiting football teams (in part because of its proximity to the training pitches).

The hotel was reopened in 1994, and has retained its original façade and many other impressive features. Internally the space offers what one might expect from a Savoy, with rooms stuffed full of marble, modern amenities and predictably patterned carpets.

A restaurant serves excellent international and Czech food, there’s a pleasant Wellness Centre downstairs, and service in general is friendly bordering on obsequious.

The atmosphere can feel just the wrong side of formal at times (it’s popular with visiting officials), and although the location at the top of the hill and close to the Castle means there are plenty of neighbouring attractions and more than a few restaurants, the region lacks the vibrancy associated with other popular areas such as Old Town Square.
