U Zlate Studne (Golden Well Hotel)

The Golden Well is a tiny offering on the frantically touristic Royal Way. This one is a wonderfully tranquil moment of calm, albeit not far from the Royal Way, set between gardens and the Castle. The excellent terrace restaurant has magnificent views over the 'city of spires' to the largest of them all, the TV tower in Zizkov.

Situated a statue’s throw from Charles Bridge and the British Embassy, this 16th-century Renaissance building (once home to the famous metal-nosed astronomer Tycho Brahe) was renovated a short time ago to create 17 attractive rooms and three plush suites.

Everything has been refurbished to a high standard, with a plethora of reproduction furniture spread throughout. Each room contains a whirlpool bath and heated bathroom floors, but it’s the spectacular views over most of the Old Town and stretching away up to Zizkov that steal the show.

U Zlaté Studne (‘The Golden Well’) also has an eponymous restaurant on the top floor – open to the public – with an outside terrace that also enjoys the panorama, as well as serving up top-class food (see Eat).

The hotel is central but still, nestled in quiet surroundings, set at the end of a small alley beyond the traffic routes; your only distraction comes from the gentle pitter-patter of the fountains situated in the hotel’s gardens below.
