Tucked behind the Colosseum on a quiet, mellow street, the Capo d’Africa has all the makings of a modern design classic, but lacks the intimidating high style of some other fashionable hotels. Behind the elegant façade flanked with palm trees, the 64 rooms and communal spaces are decorated with soft honey wood furnishings and a mellow palette of colours, keeping things crisp yet cosy.

Nods to contemporary art – such as the wall of black rubber rose buds – are creative without being overpowering. Some may complain that the hotel is a little far from the centre of town, but it depends on where you want to be and how frenetic you feel.

Notably it’s just around the corner from one of Rome’s under-visited archaeological attractions, the Basilica di San Clemente.

Highlights include the romantic roof terrace, dripping with jasmine and honeysuckle, with atmospheric views of the Colosseum and the medieval church Santi Quattro Coronati at night.
