The paint is still drying at this newly opened hotel in a quiet backstreet of Monti, but whoever judges these things was sufficiently impressed to bestow a small luxury hotel award on the Di Renzo brothers in 2006. An unassuming front door leads off the residential street into this quietly fabulous establishment, with 12 rooms touched by the magic of the Hotel de Russie’s designer.
Contemporary opulence dominates the décor, with crystal chandeliers and lavish fabrics. Particular details – for example, iPod speakers in all the rooms – help to make this boutique hotel stand out, but the real jewel in its crown is the internal walled garden on the top floor, with fig, olive and lemon trees backing onto two resplendent ‘executive suites’.
Uniquely, an original Roman subterranean crypt from the remains of Trajan’s marketplace has been excavated on the ground floor, making a cool refuge when the temperature soars.
Breakfast is served in a lounge area or on the intimate panoramic terrace overlooking the atmospheric ruins of the Roman Forum. To cap it all, it is perfectly situated for enjoying the hip Monti neighbourhood.
