The Raphael hotel sits under a romantic curtain of ivy bedecked with fairy lights in a quiet corner just behind Piazza Navona. Despite being a favourite with diplomats and politicians the atmosphere is far from stuffy.
The lobby is festooned with eclectic decorations, including original Picasso ceramics and an antique sleigh. Executive rooms on the third floor are designed by architect-du-jour Richard Meier and resemble classy Nordic houses with warm oak furnishings and bathrooms in Carrara marble.
It’s also perfectly situated for exploring the golden triangle of backstreets, wine bars and vicoli between Piazza Navona and the river, home to many of the city’s best watering-holes (Societe Lutece, Bar della Pace, Bar del Fico; see Drink).
The Raphael is also next door to the wonderful Santa Lucia restaurant, although the rooftop restaurant here on the fabulous roof terrace is a delight.
