Unapologetically pompous and kitsch, the St Regis hotel queens it up to lavish effect. Nautically dressed genteel ladies populate the lobby with their monogrammed luggage, and slightly sneering concierges add to the fun. This hotel is from a bygone age and perhaps takes first place in the baroque brigade of Rome’s hotels.

It takes itself a little too seriously – but then again has won a place on Condé Nast Traveller’s Gold List. Tea is meticulously served in the sparkling, chandeliered salon and consists of scones, slightly stale sandwiches and delicious biscuits and petits fours.

The St Regis should be approached with a sense of humour by the modern visitor, but you know your grandmother would love it. Amenities include a 24-hour concierge service, business centre, well-equipped gym and full-scale butler service in all of the 23 suites.
