A Hedonist's guide to Stockholm brings out the quintessential style of this chic Scandinavian capital. The book guides you around the top restaurants, hip bars and designer hotels making you feel like a well heeled local. Stephen Whitlock's many years of high living in Stockholm made him the ideal choice to tackle the city for Hg2.
'So, why go to Stockholm?', I hear you ask
This archipelago city has been a rising light over the last couple of years and is set to feature more prominently in the weekend break market. Stockholm and its natives fill you with the overwhelming sense that this small, bustling metropolis is indeed the foremost up-and-coming place to drink, eat and party in Europe. While the city has never been unpopular, a surge in glacially ‘cool’ designers and the major players in the IT and mobile phone business have caused the upturn in fortunes. This has allowed a thriving restaurant and bar scene to emerge, populated by the glamorous and chic acolytes of the new millennium. Stockholm is cool, Stockholm can afford to be expensive.
How long should I go for?
It’s small by capital-city standards; so small, in fact, that it is possible to see most of the sights in a couple of days without excessive effort. The essential cultural edifices can be visited easily in a few hours with a prolonged intermission for a luxurious lunch. Save some time for an expedition to the archipelago, whether by boat in summer or on skates in winter, and a wander round the city’s most famous museum, the Vasamuseet, but otherwise just allow yourself to be seduced by this beautiful, relaxed and stylish gem.
When should I go?
Is Stockholm a city for winter or summer visits? The answer is that it’s perfect for hedonists at any time of year. Lounge outside in summer in one of the picturesque squares; or relax blissfully by the fire in a warm bar or restaurant in the winter.
Where should I stay?
Stockholm is a small city in comparison to New York or Paris, so there are, consequently, fewer top-rated hotels to choose from. However, Stockholm sees a new trend of chic, boutique-style hotels as well as design-minded chains. Along with such business favourites as the
Grand Hotel or the
Radisson SAS Grand, there are the less conpicuous, although uber-chic, choices such as
Berns and
Rival hotels. If the Grand-Dame classic designs are more your taste however,
Rica Hotel Gamla Stan and
The Victory offer wonderful suites in traditional comfort. Booking couldn't be easier - just
