The Berns was originally established in 1863 as a centre for nightlife and entertainment (a role it retains to this day) but later added 65 modern, well-designed hotel rooms. They're simply furnished and incorporate lots of wood, which creates a modern, Scandinavian feel. Public spaces, in contrast, are spectacular. It's well worth dropping in for a cocktail at the bar, perhaps en route to a viewing at the neighbouring Bukowskis auction house.
The location of the Berns is perfect, in the very heart of the city. Just be aware that the hotel hosts a packed programme of club nights, not to mention shows and concerts at the Chinese theatre next door. This is a hotel to check in to if you want to feel connected to the pulse of the city, rather than safely removed from it. Check the hotel's website for coming events. Bistro Berns (see Eat) is a charming choice for lunch or dinner.
